July 1, 2014

These are my notes from the various sessions and conversations and activities at the ISTE 2014 conference in Atlanta

Tammy Worcestor

Notes for today: note

Google Search Timer
Enter in the search field “timer 5 minutes” and you have a timer! Ta da!

Print onto Sticky Notes
Uses Google Presentation and templates. Resized the slide so it fits into a square, and then can easily print to a 3×3 square. Print slides as handout with four slides per page, as portrait. Therefore a sheet of paper with four squares. Put four blank sticky notes on the page, and then print again.

Very cool idea, you can instantly have very nice printed sticky notes! Wahoo! Thanks Tammy!

You can convert Google Spreadsheets into flashcards
Can run through them all on screen, can share with a QR code, and lots of other areas.

Tammy’s YouTube Clipper
Copy address of YouTube video
Paste it into her spreadsheet, choose the start and end time. Then it gives you some autoplay and other links as well as embedded llinks.

Time Saving Tips and Tricks
Google Document Research Tool
Google Drive Document
Type / enter all of your text and information.
Highlight the word in the document, and go to Tools and select Research. Can then insert a hyperlink directly to the text. Or, you can Cite the link. Can even choose citation formats. Can even insert images, and choose only ones that are free to share. Even add quotes.

Browser Tips and Tricks
Revive a closed tab – cmd-shift-t will bring a tab back you accidentally closed. or ctrl-shift-t

right click on tab, can have an option to close all tabs to the right.
Tear off tabs to put one in it’s own window

Pin a tab – right click on tab, choose pin tab – > Makes tab really tiny, with no x

How do I get to a web browser really really fast? Or the window! Drag the icon directly to the left of the url to your desktop.

Evernote Feeder Page
Fastest way to “push” temporary information to sutdents
Create and publish evernote note
Assign domain or tiny URL to the note

Bought a domain name, from GoDaddy, was about $10. Set a redirect, so if someone types their name, it redirects to the page they need. Has a feeder page in Evernote, and can quickly get information to people.

Shorten URL
Tammy’s URL shortener and QR code generator
Google Spreadsheet, paste in a long address, get both at the same time.

Whoa! Incredible tip Tammy! Thanks so much!

Awesome YouTube Stuff
YouTube Channel – Login with Google Account, (demo’d with storybots), use link that says “Add to”, and you can add it to your own playlist, or create a new one right there. Can share entire playlist, or “play all”

Can also record a youtube video directly from your phone, and sent to youtube, right to your youtube channel.

Can also edit your videos in youtube. Can add music, text, transitions, etc. right online.

Favorite Go Paperless Tools

AWW Web Whiteboard
Instant whiteboard, can be saved/shared

Record MP3
You can quickly record audio, save a URL of your recording and use somewhere else

Capture screen with audio. Chrome plug-in called Screencastify, uploads to youtube or Google Drive.

You can doodle and it will record your drawing and your audio at the same time.
This is a very cool website that allows you to create fake iPhone conversations.

Collecting student’s assignments
Using a Google Form, create a dropbox -> Name, and URL. Suddenly you have everyone’s assignment.

Create QR codes
Easily make QR codes of images

Check Tammy’s notes, and you can get a QR code for each assignment, batch create it, and put it all on a spreadsheet next to each assignment. Very cool

This was a fantastic session! Best one I’ve been to at ISTE 2014 this year! Thanks Tammy for the great ideas!

  1. Hi there excellent website! Does running a blog similar to this take a large amount of work?
I’ve very little knowledge of coding however I
had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyways, should you have any recommendations or tips
for new blog owners please share. I know this
is off topic but I simply had to ask. Cheers!

    • Hi back! I wouldn’t say it’s a lot of work, but honestly I am doing it as much for myself. I am trying to keep up the writing practice! Glad you stopped by!
