ISTE 2014: Arrival in Atlanta
Well I am off to Atlanta! I’ve never been to Atlanta before, and it’s going to be a couple of flights! Why am I heading to Atlanta, or as others affectionately call it “Hotlanta”? Well for the ISTE 2014 conference of course! Once a year ISTE hosts a massive international conference with a crazy number of people attending, something like 12-15 thousand people! Over 1200 sessions and a massive exhibit hall all about education and technology. It’s an incredible opportunity to learn and work with other folks.
Started out with a first flight leaving Calgary at about 2:30 PM (Mountain time). If all goes well, I should arrive in Atlanta around 11:00 PM (Eastern time). Got to meet a really interesting person in line for Customs. He was a young electrical engineer from San Diego, heading home after his first couple of months on the job in Calgary. What a weather difference, eh? Spent his life in San Diego, and then to Calgary for May/June! He was very excited to go home!
So far so good, lots of room on the plane, good service, pretty smooth flight.
Uh oh, landed at Dallas, and apparently a massive lightning storm had shut the airport down for some time prior to our arrival! As such there wasn’t a gate available to us, and we sat on the tarmac for about an hour! The pilot was very good at communicating with us, and very apologetic! Finally we get to the gate, and promptly discover that my next flight is also delayed an hour! Ouch, it’s going to be a late night!
Went and found a hamburger, read a bit, and back to board my next flight. Things are looking good so far, but it’s a very full flight. We’re all on board, and the pilot tells us we’re ready to leave. Oops, spoke too soon, we’ve got to wait for some others from some connecting flights.
After another hour sitting on the tarmac, we’re finally ready to go. However our arrival is getting later and later!
Long story short, arrived in Atlanta picked up car, and drove to the condo, arriving at 2:05 AM! What a long day! I’m heading to bed!
