JTC – SuperNet 2.0 Consultation
Holly Saulou (Service Alberta), Erwin Loewen, Dave Hauschildt
Current SuperNet contract expires in June 2015
Two goals in 2015:
- Service Continuity
- Open process
Where are we today? RFP has closed, currently in evaluation phase. Going to be a massive procurement, so huge project.
Group Discussion Questions:
- What has been working well for you under SuperNet (any success stories)?
- What areas (in the last 8 years) do you see that there needs to be some improvement
- What changes do you think are required? From your perspective what more do you need from SuperNet to enable any plans you have going forward?
This was an interesting session where our table groups debated these three questions, and discussed with the entire room. Our notes from our table are below:
Question 1: What has been working well for you under Supernet?
Stability has been awesome, not a single video call dropped in 2.5 years
Access and equity has been met.
It has changed everything – do teachers remember what it was like pre-SuperNet
Roger Palmer once asked “What will you do with it?”
No real comparison outside of the Province
It has become a utility, it just works – you turn on the switch
Flexibility of access to services (ISP’s, peering, streaming, VC, VoIP, shared services potentials)
Availability of Internet at a lower cost
Reduction of windshield time
SuperNet funding grant
Operation of the network
What areas (in the last 8 years) do you see that there needs to be some improvement?
Change, as requirements change, SuperNet is slow to respond (Waiting for Service Alberta, Bell, Axia to get their act together)
Scaling up, the price points, some big jumps. (tier movement)
Scheduling changes/outages outside of Monday/Friday
Differences between Axia and Bell costs.
Communication between partners
Why the difference in GigE pricing (installation) in various school districts – shouldn’t it be the same.
Moving/new locations – no provision for that – huge costing!
Inadequate head-end funding
Question 3: What changes do you think are required? From your perspective what more do you need from SuperNet to enable any plans you have going forward?
Hosted Services (Shared or otherwise) storage, e-mail, SIS, IPP’s, CUM files
Deeper level reporting…?
QoS – more flexibility easier to modify/change.
Backup service (VPN)
Enhanced VC Services
